Outgeeked

Outgeeked!I think I’ve just been outgeeked!

I didn’t even know that was possible.

You don’t know how much I smiled when I saw this was encrypted.

Handles

Hello all.

For those of you unfortunate enough to have tried to add me to your MSN you may have noticed that my Hotmail (and indeed my username to pretty much everything except here) is kjm41483897. Initially I chose that username as it fits the password paradigm: easy for me to remember, hard for others to guess (I mean c’mon, is it memorable to you?) which meant that I was assured that no-one else in the whole wide world would have registered it, and thus I could maintain the same internet handle across all sites.

The trouble is, I’ve recently come to realise that on all of the websites that I truly love (Youtube, Twitter, Last.fm and Flickr are major examples) one’s username is the single point that people must recall in order to subscribe, recommend, relate, etc. I now find myself at the point where I do want to be in the community; I want for people to remember my handle. In fact, I want people to pronounce it, associate it, question it and love it. So, I’m looking for a new handle. I will use it on all of the above sites, as well as registering it as a domain (perhaps after uni when I can afford it )

The trouble, of course, is that when the FSM was handing out creativity, he dropped mine down the drain, and thus I am totally stuck. I need your help. Find me a handle. It must be pronounceable, short(ish) easy to remember and to spell, not contain (too many/any) numbers, and be unique enough that I can register it at all of the above sites. Ideally I’d like to avoid anything based on my name.

Some examples of usernames I envy:

nerimon
ClipCritics
dabestdude
sxephil
lonelysandwich
hotdogsladies

All are good choices. Bastards.

  1. I may have to kill Jezza in order to steal his name. It’s perfect. []

Apple wants to improve online shopping

Store imageApple wants to improve online shopping - The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)

Apple is working on new ways to improve online shopping. Apparently the biggest music seller in the US thinks that online shopping can feel "sterile and isolating." Hmm. To counteract the isolation, Apple is reportly considering showing customers where other shoppers are in the virtual stores, and maybe even letting customers interact while shopping, via chat or other interfaces. This system would also allow for storewide announcements of special events or sales going down.

An interesting idea, though I think this further quotation sums up my feelings rather well:

It’s quite a concept — online store as virtual space — but the fact for me as a consumer is that I shop online mostly to avoid exactly those things (chatting with less knowledgeable customers and annoying store loudspeaker systems).

A thousand broken hearts littering your path through here

OK, so the previous vid really put me in the mood for some Easyworld revival, hence the above. This song is best listened to in high quality (192kbps mp3 not the best, but bandwidth limitations!) with decent headphones, in a darkened room, laying down in order to appreciate how naked the beginning and end are, and how enrobing the crescendo of the middle is.

My sweet indecision do you think I’d wait around for you?

Live one camera, one take video

I do so very much like David Ford’s music. After hearing his voice and his work in Easyworld, and their subsequent dissolution, I’ve been keeping any eye on what he’s been putting out. David is releasing his album Songs for the Road in the US, and to promote that the above vid was made. Is it not spectacular!?

The observant of you will have noticed this has been on my radio blog for some time. Well I have recently figured a way to link directly to a track, so if you want to listen to the album edit without searching the blog, you can. As usual, lyrics follow.

Laser pointers now classed as weapons

A laser pointerLaser pointers now classed as weapons | Herald Sun

LASER pointers have been classed as controlled weapons in Western Australia after recent incidents in which they were used to distract plane and helicopter pilots. People who own or use the lasers illegally will now face a $4,000 fine or 12 months jail.

Look out for news next week that interesting clouds and hot stewardesses will be banned for distracting pilots.

Police use Facebook to gather evidence

GMP logoPolice use Facebook to gather evidence - Digital Lifestyle - Macworld UK

The Greater Manchester Police force is looking for friends - on Facebook.

It has created a Facebook application to collect leads for investigations, marking the first use of the social networking site by UK law enforcement.

The application delivers a real-time feed of police news and appeals for information. Next to that content is a feature to share a particular story with other friends in a person’s network, as well as post comments.

Now that’s an inventive use of new technologies!

Keep your knickers round your ankles, baby

This is usually where I post lyrics, but alas I can’t be bothered to transcribe them all.

Perhaps Dale will be nice and post them in the comments….

Take that, Apple!

We actually WANT a Surface Computer, but since we can’t afford one, we thought it might be fun to make fun of it.

This vid gets the Laugh Out Loud award.

Harpejji

This right here is the result of a piano and a guitar finding themselves drunk in each other’s arms and later doing the nasty. You play it by tapping the 24 strings on the 24 frets.

I expect I’ll see one of these at the next Patrick Wolf gig… But who the hell named it!? I mean c’mon!
